What is GMROI - and how does pricing software improve it?

GMROI measures how much gross margin every euro of inventory returns. The formula, what good looks like, and how pricing software moves the number.

Ask a merchandiser what GMROI is and you'll get the formula. Ask why it matters and you'll get the real answer: it's the number that tells you whether your inventory is working for a living. Gross Margin Return on Investment measures how many euros of gross margin you earn for every euro tied up in stock - and because it combines margin and velocity in one ratio, it's one of the few metrics that pricing decisions move directly. That's also why it's the metric where pricing optimization software proves its worth or doesn't.

The formula, quickly

GMROI = Gross margin ÷ Average inventory cost.

Sell €500,000 of gross margin in a year on an average inventory investment of €200,000, and your GMROI is 2.5 - every euro of stock returned €2.50 in margin. Below 1.0 means your inventory costs more than it earns. Healthy targets vary widely by category: fast-turning grocery lives at different numbers than furniture, so benchmark within your vertical, not against retail at large.

The insight hiding in the formula: there are only two levers. Earn more margin on what you sell, or hold less inventory to sell it. Pricing touches both.

Lever 1: margin - mostly hiding in the long tail

The margin side of GMROI is where most retailers underperform without knowing it. Actively managed hero SKUs are usually priced reasonably. The long tail - the 60-70% of the catalog priced by inertia - is where elasticity-informed increases recover margin with minimal volume cost. Lever 2: inventory - where markdowns decide the denominator

The denominator side is about how long stock sits. Two pricing behaviors quietly destroy it.

Late markdowns. A seasonal style tracking behind plan at week four, marked down at week ten, spends six extra weeks as inventory investment earning nothing - then clears at a depth that guts the numerator too. Data-triggered markdown waves, fired by sell-through rather than the calendar, intervene while the remaining season can still absorb the velocity lift. Underpricing fast movers. Less obvious: a product selling out too fast was priced below what demand supported - margin left uncaptured on inventory that would have turned anyway. Elasticity data catches this direction too.
